Shopify vs Shopify Plus: When Does the Upgrade Actually Make Sense for UK Brands?

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month, roughly £1,800 at current rates, compared to £79/month for Advanced Shopify. That's a significant step up, and as a Shopify Partner Agency founder, the question I get asked the most is, when it the right time to take the leap?

The question isn't whether Shopify Plus has better features, this is a resounding yes. The real question is whether those features are worth an additional £20,000+ per year for your specific business at its current stage. Lets dig in...

What Shopify Plus Actually Gives You

The headline benefits of Shopify Plus include: reduced transaction fees (0% vs 0.5–2% on standard plans), access to Shopify Flow for automation, Launchpad for scheduled campaigns, checkout extensibility, B2B functionality, up to 9 expansion stores, and a dedicated merchant success manager.

For UK brands, the transaction fee saving is often the first calculation worth running. If you're processing £3m+ annually through Shopify Payments, the fee reduction alone begins to offset the platform cost. At £5m+ in annual GMV, it typically covers it entirely.

The Genuine Use Cases for Shopify Plus

Checkout extensibility is the most commercially significant Plus feature for UK e-commerce brands. Being able to add upsell blocks, custom fields, loyalty point displays, or brand-specific UI elements has a measurable impact on conversion rate and average order value.

B2B Functionality Benefits

If your brand does significant B2B or wholesale volume alongside DTC, Plus's native B2B functionality is genuinely valuable, too. Shopify Flow is also worth serious consideration if your operations team is spending meaningful time on repetitive tasks.

When the Upgrade Doesn't Make Sense

The most common mistake UK brands make is upgrading to Plus to solve problems that Advanced Shopify handles perfectly well: slow site speed, checkout conversion issues at low traffic volumes, and the desire for 'more control' are not reason enough to upgrade to Plus.

The Right Revenue Thresholds for UK Brands

As a rough framework: below £2m annual GMV, standard Shopify plans are almost always sufficient. Between £2m and £5m, the decision depends on checkout customisation needs and B2B requirements. Above £5m, Plus is typically the more cost-effective choice when total cost of ownership is calculated properly.
